Black masterbatch is one of the most widely used types of masterbatch in plastics production. It is used in many areas, from film packaging to pipes and from automotive parts to cable insulation. However, the same black does not give the same result in every application.
What determines quality: carbon black and production precision
The quality of a black masterbatch depends on the physical and chemical properties of the carbon black it contains and on the precision of the production process. For a successful application, the masterbatch must offer homogeneous dispersion, be formulated at the right concentration, and meet the target values for jetness, gloss, and coverage.
Not every process calls for the same black
Every process has its own dynamics. Woven sacks and raffia tape, nonwoven fabric, blown film, injection and blow molding, and HDPE pipe production each come with different requirements. That is why it is advisable to use the products recommended for each specific application.
In film and packaging: opacity and clean production
Black masterbatch used in film and packaging applications must deliver the desired level of jetness and opacity on the product surface without causing problems such as particle formation during production.
Increasing the dosage rate does not always mean a deeper black.
If the desired deep, glossy black shades cannot be achieved even with a higher dosage rate, masterbatch solutions specially designed for such high-performance requirements should be preferred.
In aesthetics-driven sectors: high jetness
In sectors where appearance is critical, such as automotive, electronics, and cosmetics, black masterbatches with special formulations that guarantee high jetness and surface quality should be used.
Quick checklist
What is the application and the production technology?
What are the target values for jetness, gloss, and coverage?
Is the carrier resin compatible with the base polymer? (MFI)
Are you producing film or fiber? Is dispersion critical? (FPV)
What level of surface quality is expected?
